Things Your Burglar Won’t Tell You!-05/11/10

May 11th, 2010 | By connections in Uncategorized | No Comments »

burglar1. Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator.

2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier.

3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste … and taste means there are nice things inside. Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have. 4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it.

5. If it snows while you’re out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway.

6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don’t let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it’s set. That makes it too easy.

7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink. And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom—and your jewelry. It’s not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.

8. It’s raining, you’re fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door—understandable. But understand this: I don’t take a day off because of bad weather.

9. I always knock first. If you answer, I’ll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don’t take me up on it.)

10. Do you really think I won’t look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.

11. Here’s a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids’ rooms.

12. You’re right: I won’t have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it’s not bolted down, I’ll take it with me.

13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you’re reluctant to leave your TV on while you’re out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. (Find it at faketv.com.)

Your Guy’s Personality Revealed By How He Sleeps!-04/20/10

April 20th, 2010 | By connections in Uncategorized | No Comments »

The way your man sleeps with you at night could reveal his inner personality. Doctor Samuel Dunkell told Cosmo magazine (quote) “Guys likes to be in control. That doesn’t stop just because he’s asleep.” You be the judge at what type of man you’re sleeping with.
On His Back: Dr Dunkell says “In general, people who sleep on their back are very social and like to be the center of attention. He’s exposing the vulnerable zones of his body. That’s a signal to show you he’s extremely self-confident.”
• On His Side: This is actually the most common position, and guy who sleeps this way tends to be able to compromise. Dr. Dunkell says “It’s the most flexible sleeping pose possible. If you notice he draws his knees up into a fetal shape, that indicates he’s sensitive and craves comfort.”
• Facedown: These men are goal-oriented. Covering the bed with his body is man’s way of controlling the space. Dr Dunkell says these guys “like to get the job done” in bed.

Breastfeeding: The Health & Cost-Savings Benefits-04/06/10

April 6th, 2010 | By connections in Uncategorized | No Comments »

According to a new study published yesterday, if 90-percent of U.S. women breast-fed their babies for the first six months of life, hundreds of infant deaths would be prevented and billions of dollars would be saved. The findings suggest that breast-feeding may help prevent stomach viruses, ear infections, asthma, juvenile diabetes, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and even childhood leukemia. Breast milk contains antibodies that help babies fight infections and it also can affect insulin levels in the blood, thus making breast-fed babies less likely to develop diabetes and obesity. The study, appearing in the most recent issue of Pediatrics, estimates that $13 billion in medical costs could be saved. As of now, about 43 percent of U.S. mothers do at least some breast-feeding for six months, but only 12 percent follow government guidelines recommending that babies receive only breast milk for six months.

Another Reason To Quit Smoking!-04/05/10

April 5th, 2010 | By connections in Uncategorized | No Comments »

cigSmoking cigarettes isn’t just stupid. According to Doctor Mark Weiser of Tel Aviv University, smokers ARE stupid. They have an IQ about 7 points lower than non-smokers.

Doctor Weiser collected data among 20,000 young men enlisted in the Israeli army. The typical non-smoker had an IQ of 101 points. But for those who admitted to smoking cigarettes on a daily basis, their intelligence dropped down to 94 IQ points. Pack-a-day smokers were even more stupid, with an IQ hovering at 90 points.

For those skeptical about the results, Doctor Weiser measured twin bothers and the non-smoking twin always scored higher on the IQ tests than the twin who smoked.

Things You Should Never Say To Your Boss!-03/22/10

March 22nd, 2010 | By connections in Uncategorized | No Comments »

(Source: Finance.yahoo.com)

These sound like no-brainers, but many statements heard commonly around the workplace violate these basic rules. Looking for an example? Here are seven heard in workplaces all the time. They may seem ordinary, even harmless. But try reading these from your boss’s point of view. You’ll see right away why it’s smart to never allow these seven sentences to pass your lips:

“That’s not my job.” You know what? A lot of bosses are simple souls who think your job is to do what’s asked of you.

“It’s not my problem.” When people say something is not their problem it makes them look like they don’t care. This does not endear them to anybody, especially the boss.

“It’s not my fault.” Yet another four words to be avoided. Human nature is weird. Claiming that something is not our fault often has the result of making people suspect it is.

“I can only do one thing at a time.” Complaining you are overworked will not make your boss feel sorry for you or go easier on you. Instead, a boss will think: (1) you resent your job, and/or (2) you aren’t up to your job.

“I am way overqualified for this job.” Hey, maybe you are. But the fact is, this is the job you have. You agreed to take it on and, while you may now regret that decision, it’s still your job.

“This job is easy! Anyone could do it!” Maybe what you’re trying to convey here is that you’re so brilliant your work is easy. Unfortunately, it comes off sounding more like, “This work is stupid.”

“It can’t be done.” Saying something can’t be done is like waving a red flag in a boss’s eyes. Even if the thing being suggested truly is impossible, saying it is can make you look ineffectual or incapable.

A Little Red Wine Can Help Keep You Slim!-03/16/10

March 16th, 2010 | By connections in Uncategorized | No Comments »

redwine

Having a glass of red wine a day might sound like it would add up calories quickly, but that’s not necessarily the case. According to new research, women who indulge in alcohol (specifically red wine)moderately on a daily basis are less likely to gain weight in the long run than those who don’t drink alcohol at all.

Almost 20,000 women were questioned by Boston researchers about their drinking habits over a 13 year period and alcohol –free women gained the most weight. Researchers aren’t sure why this happens, but one theory is that women who drink the wine replace carbohydrate foods for it. Of course, this doesn’t change the effects of heavy drinking—which should be avoided.

Kids & The Risk of Choking-02/24/10

February 24th, 2010 | By connections in Uncategorized | No Comments »

The American Academy of Pediatrics is calling for changes in the way food is designed and labeled in order to lessen children’s chances for choking. In a report released yesterday, the pediatrics group seeks to make choking prevention a priority for government and food makers. In particular the AAP is looking to put labels on hot dogs, warning parents that the food poses a choking hazard to young children. They even would like to see hot dogs “redesigned” so they would be less likely to stick in a  child’s throat. According to AAP, other “high-risk” foods include popcorn, grapes and nuts. Choking is a leading cause of injury and death among children and about 73 kids die in the U.S. every year from choking on food. The Food and Drug Administration plans to review the AAP’s report.

New Credit Card Rules Take Effect Today!-02/22/10

credit-cards

The Credit Card Accountability and Disclosure Act (CARD) finally goes into effect goes into effect todayThe law was changed in response to years of consumer complaints about abusive behavior by credit card companies. Here are some of the  principal changes:

Payment crediting
Under the new law, if you pay more than the minimum monthly payment, the excess will be applied to balances with the higher interest rate. Currently, the credit card companies can apply it any way they choose, and usually choose to apply it to the balance with the lowest interest. The purpose of this particular change is to allow consumers to pay off their higher balances more quickly, saving on interest charges.

Paying interest
You will have a minimum of 21 days following the close of each billing cycle to pay off the balance to avoid accruing periodic interest charges. Cash advances, however, may still carry an interest charge, even if you pay it back within 21 days. The 21 day window was added because many consumers complained there was so little time between the time they received their monthly statement and when the payment was due
